With reference to Adminelly letter of 5th

Matt M 0292, forwarding copy of a report from Admiral Sir Alexander Butter KCB the late Commander in- Chief on the China Station on the inadequacy of the defences of Hongkong, and stating that my Lords Commissioner of the Admerally had called upon him for further information in reference to his statement respecting the overtures made by Germany to the Chinese Government in regard to Mirs Bay; I am commanded by their? Lordships to hansmit to you herewrch for the information of Mr. Secretary Chamberlain copy of a letter from Sir Q. Butler, dated 11th must, shearing the sources of his information on the point in question.

For convenience sake I am to add that

" Quemoy" referred to in the Admirals letter is an island

at the entrance to Amey Harbour.
